The Main branch of the Massillon Public Library now offers hot and cold beverage vending machines for the convenience of patrons.
The library is in the process of long-range planning and conducted a public survey and consultant-led focus groups. The number one request among all age groups, teens to seniors, was that coffee be provided. Library Director Sherie Brown attests that, “There is now an expectation among library users that beverages will be available, and determining how to implement that in this historic building has been a process of many years. When it came time to replace an old drinking fountain and expose a wall with existing plumbing and electrical hookup, the solution presented itself. We find that patrons are already using the machines and appreciating the service.”
Beverages with lids will now be permitted in most public areas of the library, except for the Computer Center. Drinks will be permitted in the Local History/Genealogy area, except understandably restricted when patrons are using irreplaceable historic materials.
While there is a natural concern for the well-being of all library materials, it is worth noting that books are regularly “exposed” to food and drink when checked out and spending time in patrons’ homes.
Hot beverages range in price from $.65 to $.85, and cold drinks are $1.35. The machines are owned, operated, filled and repaired by AVI foodservice. The library pays nothing, and receives nothing, for providing this service to patrons.
