Rotary Foundation Gift Funds New Accessible Desk

The Massillon Public Library announces, with appreciation, the receipt of a generous $18,000 grant from the Massillon Rotary Foundation for the construction of a customized adult circulation desk.  The new desk , designed and built by local  contractor Bill Morgan, offers accessibility for patrons in wheelchairs, and the space to add self checkout for patron convenience and privacy.

The new design reflects the reality that during 2012 more than 2000 items per day circulated, compared to the 350 items per day circulated when the library opened in 1937.  Patrons used to be limited to materials owned just by the local library, but now can place holds on materials from libraries all over Ohio.  Library staff members process a daily average of 50 mailbags of books, music and movies for library users.

The grant was made available thanks to the success of the Massillon Rotary Foundation’s annual fall fundraiser, which this year was an Oktoberfest event with both live and silent auctions.  The library acknowledges the incredible time and effort of the Oktoberfest committee, headed by Chairman Kathy Shultz, and the generous donations made by local businesses and individuals that resulted in such a successful fundraiser.  The Foundation provides grants, primarily for health and wellness purposes, to organizations that serve the Massillon and Western Stark County areas.

Construction of the desk was completed in September and was coordinated with replacement of the library rotunda’s original rubber flooring by Bob and Pete’s Floors, and updated wiring by electrician Brad Cioca.

Library Director Sherie Brown states that,  “Words cannot express our appreciation to the Massillon Rotary Foundation for this wonderful long-range contribution to the cultural life and well-being of our community.  We are honored that the Foundation agreed that everything the library does fits within the Foundation’s guidelines of “promoting physical, emotional and mental health, with educational and recreational opportunities for all ages.”
